Questions about comparing contractor quotes
How do I compare contractor quotes?
Line the quotes up item by item before you look at the totals. Check that each one includes the same work (for a roof: tear-off, underlayment, flashing, ventilation, disposal and permit), the same materials and size, the deposit, the payment schedule and the written warranty. This tool does that side by side for up to three quotes.
How do I know if a contractor quote is too high?
Compare it with the typical price range for your area and with your other quotes. A quote well above the range — or far above the others — is worth asking about: find out what it includes that the others don't. A quote far below can be missing work.
What should a contractor quote include?
A written list of the work and materials (with brand or product line), quantities, who pulls the permit, cleanup and disposal, the start date and timeline, the deposit and payment schedule, and the workmanship and materials warranties.
How many quotes should I get for a home improvement project?
Three written quotes for the same scope is a common rule of thumb. It gives you a sense of the normal price and makes missing items easy to spot.
How much deposit should a contractor ask for?
Many homeowners aim for a modest deposit, with later payments tied to finished stages of work. Some states limit home-improvement deposits by law, so check your state's rules. We flag deposits above 33%.
Is this quote checker free, and is my quote private?
Yes, it's free with no account. Your report has a private link, we never contact your contractors, uploaded files are stored privately and deleted automatically, and you can delete your report at any time.
