Water Heater Replacement Quote: What Should Be Included
Expansion tank, relief valve, venting and permit: the items that make water heater quotes hard to compare.
Published Oct 25, 2026. 1 min read.
A new water heater looks like a simple swap, but quotes can differ a lot because of the work around the tank. Before you compare prices, make sure each quote covers the same items.
The heater itself
Every quote should name the brand, model, fuel (gas or electric), type (tank, tankless or heat pump), size in gallons and efficiency rating (UEF). A 40-gallon and a 50-gallon tank are different products at different prices.
The work around it
- Removal and disposal of the old heater.
- Expansion tank, which many homes with closed water systems need.
- Temperature and pressure relief valve and its discharge pipe.
- Gas line and venting for gas units, brought up to current code.
- Shut-off valve and connectors.
- Drain pan and, where local code requires it, seismic straps.
Permit and warranty
Water heater replacements usually need a permit. Ask who pulls it. Ask for the installer's labor warranty in writing; the manufacturer's tank warranty doesn't cover installation mistakes.
