Fence Installation Quotes: What to Check Before You Sign
Posts, concrete, gates and the property line: how to compare fence quotes fairly.
Published Oct 25, 2026. 1 min read.
Fence quotes are usually priced per linear foot, which makes them look easy to compare. The details behind that number are what you need to check.
Length, height and material
Make sure every quote is for the same length, the same height and the same material and style. A 4-foot fence and a 6-foot privacy fence aren't comparable.
Posts and gates
Ask how deep the posts go, whether each is set in concrete, and how far apart they are. Gates are often priced separately — count them and check the hardware.
Before anyone digs
- 811: someone must call 811 to have buried utility lines marked. Ask who does it.
- Property line: ask who confirms where the line is. A survey may be needed.
- Permit and HOA: many towns require a permit and limit height; HOAs may restrict style and color.
Removal and finish
Check whether old fence removal is included, and for wood fences, whether staining or sealing is part of the price.
