Kitchen Remodel Quotes: How Allowances Can Hide the Real Price
A low kitchen quote with small allowances often ends up costing more. How to compare remodeling quotes properly.

Kitchen remodel quotes often include "allowances" — a set amount for items you haven't picked yet, like tile, lighting or fixtures. They make quotes look comparable when they aren't.
Check every allowance
Ask each contractor to list every allowance with its dollar amount. A quote with a small allowance for countertops or tile looks cheaper, but if your choices cost more, you pay the difference later.
Name the big items
- Cabinets: brand, line and construction — not just "cabinets".
- Countertops: material, thickness, edge and cut-outs.
- Appliances: which are supplied, which are installed, and hood venting.
The trades behind the walls
Plumbing, electrical and lighting changes usually need permits and inspections. Ask what each quote includes, especially if the layout changes.
Schedule and payments
Ask for a written schedule and a payment plan tied to finished stages, and how change orders are approved and priced.
See typical price ranges in the cost estimator, then compare your quotes side by side.
